Sitting at the short order counter
waiting for my stack o'wheats
The whole place looking empty except
for Della and me
With her grin as wide as grins go -
enough to stop any show
of headline news and morning breaker blues
We kicked back this early hour, we laughed
a while and I listened to Della's story
How she was married once, then twice
It never seemed to work out right
So she took to making her talents pay
in the name of Della's Cafe
Then one day a diner left with his two dollar tip
a book of holy writ, well-worn, well-tried
She read all through the night:
When I was a stranger, you took me in
I was in prison, you came to me and you
gave me a reason for living
She hurled her senses as if in a dream
Della, you've got more to live for than yourself, it seems
Keep watching as the front door opens
The people come happening on your way, hey, hey
There's gonna be someone, there's gonna be someone
There's gonna be someone today at Della's Cafe
That day she watched for a messenger, an angel
or someone like that
But all she saw was Benny the gasoline vendor
with his broken down jack
Standing on the corner looking so low, looking 'bout
broken-hearted... she called out - Hey Benny,
come on in! Today the daily special's on me
And they talked away the mid-day hour, and when
he left he smiled and thanked her for the lovely
flower she was
Still she kept watching, in came Cindy Rae
the aspiring actress - her dreams
Up in smoke when the last of her rent
left her flat broke
Now Della knew about this, she say - Why don't you
stay with me a few days before you head back to
Michigan, and you can make that last audition?
They settled into the evening, as Della read aloud
with a peaceful feeling
It was as if she felt some kind of presence
She hurled her senses as if in a dream
Della, you've got more to live for than yourself, it seems
Keep watching as the front door opens
The people come happening on your way, hey, hey
There's gonna be someone, there's gonna be someone
There's gonna be someone today at Della's Cafe
Restless hearts, restless hearts
Come on down to Della's Cafe
