She was boarding the first day
of the rest of her life
on the midnight transcontinental train
just to clear her sights
and catch the last star in the southern sky

And he was heading west
to make the best of his
soon to be forgotten past life
he'd never do it again --
fall in the arms of a woman

But there was something in the southern sky
     just waiting to happen...
when they come together over the rainbows
and they run together where the southern cross
     and rivers forge the night
It's heaven's light

So you see they were stuck on this train
across the country for four long days...
and he had a rough exterior
she didn't know what to do with
but underneath that rough exterior
was a heart to handle

And when he saw her moving
     in the moonlight
oh, she was beautiful to him
and all the stony places
were beginning to soften in his heart

And there was something in the southern sky
     just waiting to happen...
when they come together over the rainbows
and they run together where the southern cross
     and rivers forge the night
It's heaven's light

A thunder and lightening as the rain poured
their eyes met in a heavy stare
long enough to lay down old doubts and pride
on the painted desert rolling by

Waiting for something in the southern sky
     just waiting to happen...
when they come together over the rainbows
and they run together where the southern cross
     and rivers forge the night
It's heaven's light
